The first steps towards success in any science field is understanding the rules and regulations needed to be adhered in the laboratory. Although my Grade 5 class uses the SMT room to do their practicals, instead of the lab, the same rules should be implemented. This is a introduction to the basic rules, symbols and apparatus used in any school laboratory in the world.

These are the basic signs that are needed to be remembered in order to identify their warning or instruction. The worksheet explains the most important rules to follow such as dress code when conducting experiments that involves chemicals, electrical or heating equipment.
This worksheet has detailed rules to follow when drawing a diagram in any science field. Some rules such as magnification and scale drawing of diagrams are not taught to learners in the intermediate phase and are therefore left out when they do any scientific drawing.
This format is sequence of events that learners have to carry out in order to produce a complete investigation. We teach learners from grade 4 to start using this format so that they are able to produce reports on their experiments in the standard quality expected from scientific experiments.
Every subject or organisations have their own unique jargon. In science, all equipment are known as apparatus and are given specific names. This makes it easier to understand what exactly was used in a particular experiment and allows everyone to be on par with each other.
I made a worksheet with the common apparatus found in any lab. A test is also given to help learners to grasp the names easily.
Always remember that rules are made in order to ensure order and safety in the laboratory as accidents may happen and people’s life may be endangered when the rules are broken.
